Instigating a National Reference Collection for Spain’s Threatened Pollinators - INC-STEP | Horizon Europe

The INC-STEP project, funded by the Horizon Europe programme within the TETTRIs calls, aims to develop a national reference collection of pollinators in Spain. This project, coordinated by the MNCN-CSIC, includes partner institutions such as the Universitat de València (through the MUVHN), the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the Universidad de Navarra and the Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona. The project focuses on six key groups of pollinating insects (diurnal butterflies, flower flies and bees/bumblebees) and covers tasks such as taxonomic review, digitisation of collections, development of identification tools and gap analysis of existing collections. Open access to virtual collections will also be promoted, benefiting both scientists and the general public who need to consult them. The Museu de la Universitat de València d'Historia Natural (MUVHN) will digitise its collections of pollinating insects, coordinate the location of relevant collections in Spain and analyse changes in the distribution and density of pollinators, key to understanding their evolution and their role in biodiversity and agriculture.
